PANEL DISCUSSION & FILM ON RESPONSIBLE SEX EDUCATION IN VOLUSIA COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, 7PM FRIDAY, JULY 11TH IN ORMOND BEACH
The Volusia/Flagler Chapter of the ACLU is hosting a panel discussion of Responsible Sex Education in Volusia County Public Schools with members of the community Friday, July 11th. This 90 minute program begins at 7 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 56 North Halifax Drive in Ormond Beach. The program will feature a panel and short film.
Our distinguished panel will discuss the current policy of abstinence-only sex education, its flaws and why our students need a comprehensive, honest sex education as part of their public school health curriculum. Panel members include:
Kevin Aplin, Vice President, ACLU of Florida Brevard Chapter. Kevin's chapter along with local concerned parents and volunteers from NOW and Planned Parenthood reviewed Brevard County's sexuality curriculum and determined that it contained inaccurate information and gender bias which was found to be contrary to fact-based sexuality education. As part of a multi-faceted campaign to draw attention to the flawed curriculum and reasonable solutions, the Brevard Chapter organized meetings with School Board representatives, letter-to-editor campaigns and advised the District's Curriculum Committee. Their efforts helped persuade the local school board to overturn the abstinence-only policy and provide students with medically and factually-accurate information.
Jenna Cawley, Director of Education & Advocacy at Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando and the Vice President, National Organization for Women Orlando Chapter.
Lynn Koller, parent, freelance writer who's covered health issues and a member of SHAC (School Health Advisory Committee).
In addition to the panel, there will be a showing of the ACLU's short film "Freedom to Know - Sex Education". The film depicts the successful effort in Brevard County which resulted in a revised curriculum that included comprehensive sexuality education.
This event is open to the public.
This 90 minute program begins at 7 pm and will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 56 North Halifax Drive in Ormond Beach.
